How to Get to Piva Canyon & Plužine: Routes from Kotor, Dubrovnik & Žabljak
The Piva Canyon sits in a beautifully remote corner of north-western Montenegro. Getting there is part of the adventure — here's how to reach Plužine and the Via Ferrata Piva trailhead from the main gateways.
Where you're heading
Your destination is the town of Plužine, on the shore of Piva Lake. The Via Ferrata Piva trailhead is in the canyon nearby — once you book, we send exact GPS coordinates and a meeting point.
Driving distances to Plužine
Žabljak: ~49 km · ~50 min
Nikšić: ~57 km · ~1–1.5 hours
Podgorica: ~108 km · ~2 hours
Kotor: ~138 km · ~2.5 hours
Dubrovnik (Croatia): ~149 km · ~2 h 40 min (border crossing)
Šćepan Polje (Tara rafting / BiH border): ~26 km · ~33 min
By car (the best option)
A car gives you the freedom to enjoy the spectacular approach and to combine the canyon with other sights. The most common route from the coast and the capital runs via Nikšić, then north along the dramatic Piva canyon road. Roads are paved but winding and mountainous, so allow more time than the raw distance suggests, and drive carefully through the canyon's many tunnels.
From Podgorica, Kotor or the coast
Head to Nikšić, then follow the road towards Plužine through the Piva Canyon. From Kotor or Budva, allow around 2.5 hours; from Podgorica, roughly 2 hours.
From Dubrovnik (Croatia)
Roughly 2 h 40 min, including an international border crossing — bring your passport and any required vehicle documents, and allow extra time in peak season.
From Žabljak & Durmitor
If you're already in the north, Žabljak is only about 50 minutes away on the paved route. In summer there's also a higher, more scenic mountain shortcut over the Sedlo Pass (the highest paved pass in Montenegro), but note it's closed from roughly November to April.
The scenic canyon road
However you arrive, the final stretch along Piva Canyon is unforgettable — emerald water far below, sheer cliffs above, and more than 50 short tunnels carved into the rock. It's one of the most beautiful drives in the Balkans, so plan a few photo stops.
Without a car
Public transport to Plužine is limited, with infrequent regional buses. Most visitors arrive by car or private transfer. If you're relying on buses, build in plenty of flexibility and check schedules locally, as they change seasonally.
