12 Unforgettable Things to Do Near Piva Canyon & Plužine
The Piva region is one of the most rewarding bases for adventure in all of Montenegro — wild canyons, an emerald lake, UNESCO mountains and dramatic roads, all within easy reach of Plužine. Here are twelve unforgettable things to do.
1. Climb the Via Ferrata Piva
The signature adventure: Montenegro's first certified via ferrata, a beginner-friendly iron path that traverses the canyon and finishes with an 80-metre vertical ascent. No experience needed — just book your Via Ferrata Piva adventure.
2. Kayak or paddleboard on Piva Lake
Glide across the glassy, emerald Piva Lake beneath towering cliffs and into hidden coves. The calm water suits beginners and families.
3. Drive the legendary canyon tunnel road
The road from Plužine to Šćepan Polje carves through more than 50 cliff tunnels and across the Mratinje Dam — one of the most spectacular drives in the Balkans.
4. Cross the Mratinje Dam
Stand atop one of Europe's tallest dams (220 m) and look down into the gorge it created. An engineering marvel and a great photo stop.
5. Visit the relocated Piva Monastery
A 16th-century Orthodox monastery that was moved stone by stone to save it from the rising reservoir, complete with over a thousand preserved fresco fragments. A peaceful, historic counterpoint to the adrenaline.
6. Go white-water rafting on the Tara
Just half an hour away, the Tara River offers world-class rafting through the deepest canyon in Europe (season roughly April–October).
7. Photograph the Đurđevića Tara Bridge
The iconic five-arch bridge, 365 m long and 172 m above the river, is one of Montenegro's most photographed landmarks — and there's a zip line across the gorge nearby.
8. Hike in Durmitor National Park
The UNESCO-listed Durmitor park is about 50 minutes away, with the easy Black Lake loop and the demanding climb of Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m).
9. Drive the Sedlo Pass to Trsa
In summer, the high mountain road over the Sedlo Pass (1,907 m, the highest paved pass in Montenegro) past the meadows of Trsa delivers viewpoint after viewpoint. Open roughly May–October only.
10. Try sport climbing above the lake
A climbing crag just outside Plužine offers dozens of bolted routes for a range of abilities — a natural add-on for anyone who catches the climbing bug on the via ferrata.
11. Go canyoning in the Komarnica / Nevidio area
The upstream Komarnica River (part of the Piva system) carved the legendary Nevidio Canyon — the last canyon in Europe to be conquered, in 1965, with walls up to 400 m and a passage just 25 cm wide in places. A bucket-list canyoning experience in summer for the adventurous.
12. Fish or simply unwind on the lake
Piva Lake is rich in trout, and its quiet shores are perfect for slowing down after a day of adventure — a swim in the cool water, a picnic, and the mountains all to yourself.
Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO gem next door to Piva Canyon. Black Lake, Bobotov Kuk, Žabljak and the dramatic Sedlo Pass — how to combine it with via ferrata.
