What to Wear & Pack for Via Ferrata Piva: A Practical Checklist

Via ferrata climber wearing helmet, harness and gloves on a sunny rock face

You don't need to buy a mountain of gear for the Via Ferrata Piva — the technical equipment is provided. But the right clothes and a few small items will make your climb far more comfortable. Here's exactly what to wear and pack.

Footwear: the one thing to get right

Your shoes matter more than anything else. Wear sturdy hiking boots or approach shoes with a stiff, grippy sole and good ankle support. Closed-toe and properly laced is essential. Avoid trainers with smooth soles, sandals or anything slip-on — they don't grip the rungs or rock reliably.

Clothing: think layers

Mountain weather changes fast, so dress in adjustable layers:

  • Base layer: a moisture-wicking top. Avoid cotton — once it's damp with sweat it stays wet and chills you.
  • Mid-layer: a light fleece or thin insulated layer for shade, wind and early starts.
  • Shell: a packable windproof/waterproof jacket. Even on a sunny forecast, carry one.
  • Legs: stretchy long trousers protect your knees and shins on the rungs and let you move freely.

Gloves

Gloves are strongly recommended. The lifeline is braided steel that can develop sharp burrs, and you'll be gripping cable and rungs for a couple of hours. Gloves prevent cuts and blisters, improve grip and keep your hands warm. Fingerless gloves give dexterity; full-fingered give more protection. (We can advise on options for your tour.)

Packing checklist

  • Sturdy hiking boots / approach shoes
  • Moisture-wicking base layer (no cotton)
  • Light fleece or insulating mid-layer
  • Packable rain/wind shell
  • Long, stretchy trousers
  • Gloves
  • At least 1.5 L of water
  • Energy snacks
  • Sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, sun hat
  • Small 20–30 L backpack (no loose dangling straps)
  • Phone / small camera

What's already provided

On a guided Via Ferrata Piva tour, all the technical safety equipment is included: a certified helmet, harness, gloves and the EN 958 via ferrata set. You don't need to own or rent any of it. Curious how each item protects you? Read via ferrata safety equipment explained.

What NOT to bring or do

  • No cotton clothing and no slick or open footwear.
  • No loose straps dangling off your pack — they can snag the cable.
  • Never improvise or reuse a via ferrata lanyard whose energy absorber has already deployed.
  • And remember: no alcohol before or during the climb, for everyone's safety.

A note on the weather window

What you pack depends on the season — a July climb needs more sun protection, while May and October mornings can be crisp. Plan your timing with our best time to visit Piva Canyon guide.
