Plan a day at Piva: the climb, the lake and the canyon road

Via Ferrata Piva takes one to two hours, so the climb leaves most of the day free. Everything in this post is on or just off the M-3, the road that comes up from Nikšić past Piva Monastery to Plužine, follows Piva Lake to the Mratinje Dam, runs down the canyon to the via ferrata bridge and reaches the Šćepan Polje border crossing 7 km later.
Climb in the morning
We offer start times from 08:00 to 18:00. In July and August a morning start is the better choice, because summer afternoons in Plužine are usually in the mid-20s °C and can reach 30 °C, and the 80 m wall at the end of the loop is open rock. In spring and autumn the heat matters less. In winter the light goes early, and the canyon road is easier to drive in daylight, so a morning or midday start works best then too.
The meeting point is the east end of the road bridge over the Piva, 20 km from Plužine and about 25 minutes by car. We send the exact spot with your booking confirmation. Your guide fits your helmet, harness and gloves at the bridge and explains the via ferrata set before you set off. The briefing is part of the one to two hours, so a 09:00 start leaves the whole afternoon free. The complete guide describes the route stop by stop, and what to wear covers shoes and clothes.

Lunch in Plužine
After a morning climb, drive the 25 minutes back up the canyon road to Plužine, which has cafés and restaurants. Bring water and a snack for the climb itself.
Afternoon on Piva Lake
Piva Lake is the reservoir behind the dam. Piva Nature Park runs boat trips on the lake and rents kayaks in Plužine, and a cruise along the lake takes two to three hours.
You can swim in summer, but much of the shore is steep and rocky, so choose your spot. Fishing needs a permit from the Piva Nature Park office in Plužine. More on the lake and the dam is in Piva Lake and the Mratinje Dam.

There is also a zipline at the entrance to Plužine. The national tourist board lists it as the longest in Montenegro, about 1,400 m in two flights with a short walk between them, with speeds of up to 65 km/h. It is sold for the spring and summer season, so check that it’s running before you plan your afternoon around it.
Piva Monastery
Piva Monastery stands near the village of Goransko, about 8 km south of Plužine on the M-3 towards Nikšić. If you came up from the coast, you pass it on the way home. The church was built between 1573 and 1586 beside the source of the Piva. The reservoir would have flooded it, so between 1969 and 1982 it was taken apart stone by stone and rebuilt about 3.5 km away on higher ground. About 1,260 m² of frescoes were lifted off the walls and put back in the new building.
The canyon road
Between Plužine and Šćepan Polje the M-3 passes through more than 50 short rock tunnels, most of them narrow and unlit, and crosses the crest of the 220 m Mratinje Dam, where stopping isn’t allowed. The canyon below the dam is the part of the Piva that the reservoir didn’t drown. The Piva Canyon guide has its length, depth and history.
Past the via ferrata bridge the road runs another 7 km, about 10 minutes, to Šćepan Polje. This is where the Piva and the Tara meet and become the Drina, just over the border on the Bosnian bank, and where the one-day rafting trips on the Tara finish. Our partners Adventure Montenegro run rafting from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje, so you can climb one day and raft the next.
Where to stay
Plužine is the obvious base, 25 minutes from the bridge, with the lake and the monastery close by. If you’re rafting the Tara the next day, the rafting camps around Šćepan Polje are 10 minutes past the bridge. Žabljak, the town for Durmitor, is about 1 h 50 from the bridge, so it suits a trip where the climb is one day among several in the mountains.
For a second day, Durmitor National Park is over the Sedlo pass in summer, the Tara rafting trips finish at Šćepan Polje, and Trnovačko Lake makes a full day out, with the drive round through Bosnia and a walk of about two hours each way. Things to do near Piva Canyon lists more, and if you’re driving up from Kotor or Budva, Kotor or Piva has the timings for a day trip from the coast.
